The owners of Abshire & Haylan Jewelers in Stow announce that their goldsmith, Belinda Merritt, won the Best in Show honors in the jewelry design contest at the recent Mid-America Jewelers Association Jewelry Show in Columbus. Formerly known as the Ohio Jewelers Association, the Mid-American Jewelers Association promotes and supports retail jewelers in Ohio, Indiana and Michigan. Abshire & Haylan Jewelers is a member of the MAJA.

"I cannot speak highly enough of the way that Belinda has grown professionally during the time that she has been the goldsmith at Abshire & Haylan Jewelers. Whether it is sizing a ring or designing a custom piece of jewelry, Belinda strives for excellence," states Lisa Miholer, co-owner of Abshire & Haylan. "She is an amazing jewelry artist that listens carefully to her customers. She designs every piece of custom jewelry that is sold in our store."

The winning design is an aquamarine and diamond pendant. The 10.62 carat aquamarine is set in 14-karat white gold and contains .62 carats of diamonds. It was selected among 20 entries that were submitted by other MAJA members. By taking the Best in Show honors, Merritt won the right to submit her piece in the national show sponsored by Jewelers of America that will take place in February 2011. "What makes this award special is that the piece was selected by those attending the show," continues Miholer. "We've known for a long time that Belinda is the best at what she does, but to get that affirmation by others in the industry is a wonderful compliment."

"I love working with Belinda and our clients on custom-design pieces," remarks Lori Wells, jewelry consultant at Abshire & Haylan. "Belinda and I talk with and listen to our clients to truly find out what they are looking for...then Belinda goes to work. Her amazing, full-color, hand-drawn illustrations are true-to-size. This helps the clients know (almost exactly) what the finished piece will look like," says Wells. "I love the 'big reveal.' Showing a client their finished, custom piece of jewelry is always exciting."

"I consider each piece of jewelry a work of art; and, I love the challenge that each piece presents. What most people may not realize about custom design jewelry is that it can be for everyone. One-of-a-kind affordable pieces are what we create for our Abshire & Haylan clients," says Belinda Merritt, the award-winning designer. "Receiving this recognition is not only wonderful personal accomplishment, but it is also an accolade for Abshire & Haylan."
